Playin' In The Fields

Got fed up with watching the news one night, with story after story about people killing in the name various religious and political beliefs.
I was wanderin' lost the other day,/ when suddenly it all became clear

Up was up and down was down, / and nothin' else mattered at all

Told my friends, some shook their heads, / but some nodded with eyes open wide

This has got to get out, people must see, / This is finally it, the real way to be.

So we marched out onto the web, / filled pages with our beliefs,

got love mail, hate mail, / questions and (of course) spam,

People were listening, / reveling in our truth,

Across the world word spread / even as far as Duluth

Got interviews, spread the words, / even got on old Dow Jones,

I was for real, (MTV said so), /saving people from themselves,

I was happy as a clam,/ rich as rich can be,

I must be right, I thought, /else why would all this be?

Then one morning I got mail, / a disturbing word at that,

"No, no, no, you got it all wrong" / this the stranger said,

"Up is down, down is up, / and left and right are strong"

"People following you are lost, / doomed to damnation and wrong"

My friends were mad, "this guy is evil, / he's trying to confuse"

"We've got to stop him, right now, / before all we've gained we lose"

So they set out to fight, / unpleasant but good 'cuz they know they're right

Blood spilled in my name / was blood well spent,

So the sides are all lined up, / each one sure they're right.

Of course, the price of true belief / is the darkening of the light,

Minds closed to temptation, lies, and illusions, / spread by those who hate

our way of life, our views of earth, / our destiny and our fate.

We know we're right, absolutely right, / everyone else is wrong.

To tolerate them is to tolerate sin, / and then, they'll have won,

We have to win, we have the Word, / we will overcome,

...
I got up one day, / walked out into the fields.

Looked around, looked away, / thought "this doesn't seem real"

So I got out on a boat, / headed out to sea,

In search of truths, lies, and more; / anything to entertain me..

I hear of my friends now and then, / always fighting the fight,

"Don't they get tired?" I wondered, / ...

Me I'm still searching, / someday I'll get it right,

Truth's out there, somewhere, / waiting to see the light.
