Dreamy-Eyed Country Girl

Dreamy-eyed country girl
sittin’ on a split-rail fence
Bullfrogs down by the fishing pond
croakin’ out their froggy sense
Palomino ponies in the pasture run
wild, think they’re runnin’ free
Young girl eyes the gathering clouds
the wind sighs as if in a plea
Cool-eyed city boy
takes a seat in Herald Square
So many people passing by
few of them really there
Taxi horns honk through the grid locked mess
cars cutting across the grain
From underground the subway rumbles
like thunder before the coming rain
'Twixt the two, twin mountains rise
split, by a river between
Man-made chains of stone and steel
bind the two it would seem
All the while the river flows
moving like nothing's there
Above it all the four winds blow
unfettered, without care.
